Why You Should Always Buy Organic Strawberries
Strawberries are like perfect bright red jewels you can eat. They are sweet, slightly tangy, and rich in flavor and color. They contain high levels of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants and they are perfect for eating alone or as an ingredient in tons of recipes.
However, not all strawberries are created equal. Conventional strawberries grown with pesticides versus organic strawberries not sprayed with pesticides are dramatically different.
Let’s take a look at the dangers of conventional strawberries below.
The Problem with Conventional Strawberries
Conventional strawberries, meaning strawberries that are sprayed with pesticides and are not grown organically, are part of the EWGs Dirty Dozen list. The Dirty Dozen and fruits and vegetables that are grown with pesticides and hang on to a top of those pesticides after harvested. The pesticides can either accumulate in large amounts on the outside of the fruit or veggies or the can seep into the food itself and it cannot be washed away.
When strawberries are grown, the farmers use a massive amount of toxic gases that are highly poisonous. Many of those chemicals were developed for chemical warfare purposes and obviously, they have no place anywhere near human food.
Farmers spray these gases on fields before planting their strawberry crops in order to kill every single living bug and organism around. Even after the fruit is washed before eating and rinsed in the fields, there are still high traces of these chemicals on and in the strawberries.
In fact, a study from the EWG found that strawberries contain three times the amount of pesticides compared to other conventional produce. This may be due to the fact that strawberries do not have any protective outer layer, skin, or rind. The skin is porous and the chemicals and pesticides sprayed on or near the plants can absorb the chemical easily.
Therefore, the best way to avoid these pesticides is to only buy organic strawberries. Yes, they are more expensive, but ingesting all of those chemicals on conventional strawberries is simply not worth it. Spending the extra few dollars on organic strawberries can save your body from any unwanted health issues, hence saving you lots of money on medical bills in the future anyway.
If you want to take things a step further, growing your own strawberries or finding a local farm that grows organic strawberries is even better than mass-produced organic strawberries. You can control exactly how they are grown and what they are exposed to when you grow them yourself. Similarly, buying organic strawberries from a local farmer will also allow you to speak with the farmer directly. You can ask about growing conditions, what they use to grow them, and sometimes your local farmer will even give you a tour of the farm, so you can see exactly where your berries are coming from and what they are using to grow them!
In the end, buy organic strawberries at all times. If you cannot find organic strawberries, opt for another type of fruit to buy and eat during the week. Plus, organic strawberries taste so much more delicious and flavorful compared to their conventional counterparts.
So, go find yourself some organic strawberries and snack away!
