Why Most New Year’s Resolutions Fail
One blogger who creates online personal courses to help people discover their dream job found students would rather continue doing something that doesn’t work than try something new that could work and fail. It’s an insane quirk of human behavior to aim for predictability instead of the risk of feeling ashamed and guilty due to perceived failure.
But that’s just one of many reasons people don’t achieve their resolutions. Here’s some more:
New Year’s Resolutions Are The Only Way We Know to Change
With change, there is no magical secret known only to a select group of people. Rather, change is simply taking small daily steps toward a goal consistently over time, and never letting any obstacles stay permanently in the way.
The media glorifies “New Year’s resolutions,” but they don’t say anything about dedicated plans. So, most people get caught up in the craze, without creating a realistic method for reaching their goals.
Much Change Relies on Personal Willpower
Everyone’s willpower has a limit. You see extreme examples of willpower, like the workaholic who’s on the job 100 hours per week. Or, you see the person who runs an Iron Man. Those are extreme examples, and things most of us can’t do. But, the media run these things constantly, holding them up as the ideal for all humans to ascribe themselves to.
For most people, willpower only leads to burnout. Instead, you have to rely on a trial-and-error system that works for you. If you want to lose weight, park your car farther away from the store. Replace fatty foods with healthy ones whose taste you enjoy. Make exercise a central family activity.
The system will help you succeed. Willpower will not.
Use SMART Goals
This may be cliché to say, but it does work: “SMART” goals are:
If you find yourself balking on any of these aspects of setting a goal, that’s fear or doubt creeping in. Some part of you resists setting the goal.
It’s nothing to worry about or be ashamed of. It’s the human condition. Everyone does it.
When you notice this happening, simply let it go and stick to your goals. Talk to your spouse or best friend about your doubts and concerns to help you let go of them.
You Can Do It
Regardless of your resolution, or goal, you can make it happen. It may not work out on your timeframe. However, you can make it come to fruition with the right systems and attitudes in place.
