How To Choose The Safest All Natural Sunscreen
When it comes to using sunscreen, it is super important you get one that is going to work well. But it is equally as important to ensure the sunscreen you are choosing is also safe and healthy for your body and your skin – you want it to be all natural sunscreen.
All natural sunscreen can mean a wide variety of things and many of the sunscreens on the market that claim to be all natural or made with natural ingredients really are not as clean, safe, and natural as they are trying to appear. Many of them can still be filled with loads of unnatural and chemical ingredients that can do a lot of damage to both your skin and body.
Therefore, it is important to make sure the all natural sunscreen you are buying is actually natural and safe.
In this post, we are going to discuss a few of the top tips for how to choose the safest natural sunscreens, so you can ensure you are protecting your skin, but in the healthiest and cleanest way possible.
Checklist for Choosing the Best All Natural Sunscreen – 4 Important Rules
1. Active ingredients should be zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both.
When you read the ingredient list on the back of the sunscreen, the only ingredients in the “active ingredient” section should be zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. But in general, most of the time both ingredients are paired together because they make each other much more effective at protecting your skin from the sun. These are the only two natural and safe ingredients that protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays that are not harmful chemicals that are found in conventional sunscreens.
2. Look for the word “non nanoparticles.”
By choosing a sunscreen that uses non nanoparticles, you can ensure that you are not using the active ingredients that have been ground down into teeny tiny particles that absorb through your skin and into your body. Some natural brands will do this because the sunscreen will rub into your skin easier and will leave less of that white film you often get with all natural sunscreen. But there are health concerns with the fact that those very small particles can enter into your body. Non nanoparticles cannot be absorbed into the skin and body. Just keep in mind it will leave their white/purple hue on the top layer of your skin.
3. Pay close attention to the other ingredients in the sunscreen as well.
While it is super important to keep an eye on the active ingredients, don’t neglect the other ingredients too! These are just as important. The non-active ingredients can contain chemicals and other undesirable ingredients even when a sunscreen claims to be all natural. For instance, these sunscreens will still contain harsh alcohols, artificial dyes, and synthetic fragrances that you want to avoid at all costs. Fragrance is one of the worst ingredients you can find on a product ingredient label. This is because the company is not required by the FDA to disclose what they include in their fragrance. There can be hundreds of hidden chemicals snuck into the product without the costumer being even remotely aware.
4. Find a USDA Certified Organic sunscreen if possible. At the very least, find one with the least amount of ingredients.
Buying an organic sunscreen means that it is never made with anything GMO, artificial, or harmful. No pesticides or herbicides will be found, and the product is going to be quite pure. If you are not finding a 100% organic sunscreen that you like, try to find an option that has the least amount of ingredients as possible. You should be able to pronounce and know each of the ingredients on the label. Nothing should sound like a scary chemical experiment.
In the end, it may sound intimidating at first to find an all natural sunscreen. But once you have a few key tips in your arsenal, it won’t be nearly as challenging and difficult. There are so many natural and organic sunscreens on the market that work amazingly well.
