65 Million Prescriptions Are Handed Out Each Year…Without the FDA’s Approval
Think the government can keep you safe? They can’t. The Fort Myers NBC affiliate (channel 2) found doctors, pharmacists, and patients have absolutely no idea whatsoever certain prescriptions don’t even have the FDA’s approval.
Drug manufacturers slip their products in by marketing and selling them with already FDA-approved drugs. Others pay to have their unapproved drugs listed in the Physician’s Desk Reference Book, which nearly every doctor uses.
Politics Also Affects How the Pharmaceutical System Works
Former head of the FDA Robert Califf was nominated by President Obama for his position as FDA commissioner in September 2015. The Senate confirmed his post in February 2016. He eventually stepped down voluntarily in January 2017.
He was formerly a researcher at Duke, and he received funding from 25 big drug companies like Johnson & Johnson, Lilly, Merck, and GSK. Califf was an early cheerleader of Xarelto, despite many medical experts disapproving of the drug, which eventually caused 379 deaths. He eventually stepped down in January because of the change in power in the US presidency.
Are Prescriptions Really All They’re Cracked Up To Be?
There’s no doubt many prescriptions do good things. They even save many lives. You can’t argue with that.
But you can’t view them as “miracle pills” that cure everything. They have their flaws. They’re not perfect. Sometimes, they cause more problems than they solve.
We’re just saying you shouldn’t blindly trust what you hear. There’s a system for getting drugs to market. And it’s not always an honest and ethical one, either.
At the same time, you have to be careful with nutritional supplements too. They sometimes have side effects. They can’t completely cure a condition.
But they can help. And you can make the decision about them, rather than being subject to a doctor and insurance companies.
It’s all your choice. We’re just trying to give you information so you make the right one for you.
