How to Stay Active Outdoors: 10 Things to Do
Believe it or not, how to stay active is one of the most common questions people have. Especially when spring begins to make an appearance, when the sun is out more, and the weather warms up. At this point, it is much easier to go outside, be active, and get moving. Most of the time, good weather means the motivation to do outdoor activities.
If you feel like being cooped up in the gym is not for you when there is gorgeous weather outside, you are not alone! You should not feel guilty for not wanting to get an intense treadmill workout or weightlifting session inside when you could be out enjoying nature and the weather.
The good news is, there are many amazing and fun ways to stay active and get a solid workout outdoors. You can stick to your favorites or change them up all the time, so you never get bored with working out, moving your body, and staying healthy.
Without further ado, here are the best ten things you can do to stay active outdoors this spring.
1. Go on a hike
Walks are great, but getting out on an excellent hike with lots of hills and elevation differences can be one killer workout. You get to work those legs and butt muscles, even more, your heart rate gets higher, and you are likely to get a whole lot sweatier as well. The good thing about hiking is there are so many different hikes you can choose from wherever you live, and it is super fun to do with a hiking buddy or your dogs!
Perhaps plan 2 to 4 different hikes per month to help keep you active outdoors for the spring.
2. Go for a walk
You cannot always get out on a big hike, and that is where walking outside comes in handy. You can walk anywhere. The park, a train, around the neighborhood, up and down your driveway, around your yard…you name it. You can pretty much walk all day every day. Doing a daily walk in the spring gets your body moving, is low impact, and a perfectly simple way to stay active.
3. Play a sport
If you like to play sports, spring is the time to get back outside and get running around doing your favorite game with family and friends. Choose from options like golf, tennis, basketball, baseball, soccer, throwing a frisbee, football, or anything else that you love. If you enjoy playing a particular sport, it isn’t even going to feel like you are working out.
4. Ride your bike
Taking a ride on your bike can sometimes feel like one of the most freeing and relaxing things. But it comes with the added benefit of getting exercise and your body moving outdoors.
5. Bring the weights outdoors
If you are looking to get some weight training done, but don’t feel like sitting inside a hot and stuffy gym, take those weights outside! This outdoor weightlifting is the perfect way to get some fresh air, enjoy the sun if you’d like, and still build muscle and keep toned.
6. Practice yoga on the grass
The good thing about yoga is that you can practice it anywhere, even outdoors. Grab your yoga mat, find a perfect spot on the grass, and Zen out while getting in a solid workout outside that is rejuvenating and refreshing.
7. Try out a water sport
If you are into water sports, depending on where you live, spring may indeed be warm enough to get back out and start surfing, wakeboarding, and more.
8. Run around with the kids or dogs in your yard or park
If you have kids, dogs, or both – take everyone outside for some fun outdoor playtime. Run around with your kids in the backyard. Take them to the park, or play fetch with your pup – anything that gets you outside and moving your body with your loved ones.
9. Hand wash your car
Washing your car can be a great workout. You’re working your arms, core, and even your butt and legs from squatting and bending to wash your car. Plus, you are moving around and getting in some steps, which are all perfect ways for how to stay active outdoors.
10. Do some gardening
Another great yet unconventional workout is gardening and yardwork. You can easily spend hours doing so, and by the time you finish, you will be surprised at just how much you have sweated and how many calories you have burned!
