How To Get Rid Of A Stuffy Nose – Natural Remedies
Are you looking for “how to get rid of a stuffy nose” remedies? With fall right around the corner, the weather cooling down, colds, flu, and different allergens surfacing, stuffy noses are an all too common issue going into fall.
While having a stuffy nose is not severe in most cases, stuffiness and congestion are undoubtedly annoying and uncomfortable. It is mainly an issue when you are trying to fall asleep at night or wake up in the middle of the night, struggling to breathe.
Thankfully, there are a handful of effective ways to get rid of a stuffy nose at home and naturally. You do not have to continually take over the counter medications, use nasal sprays, or suffer from a clogged nose all fall and winter long.
Try Using Steam
If you need to clear your stuffy nose with simple things you already have at home, using steam will be your best solution. All you need is a pot, boiling water, and a towel to cover your head.
Fill a large bowl with boiling water, lean your head over the bowl, and drape a towel over your head. This will allow the steam to travel through your nose and help loosen all that congestion.
Even simpler is drinking a warm beverage, such as tea. The heat and steam from tea or another hot drink has a similar effect as the towel and boiling water method.
Use a Natural Saline Spray to Get Rid of a Stuffy Nose
Using a pure saline nasal spray is also an excellent way to get rid of a stuffy nose. Saline spray is a saltwater solution that hydrates dry nasal passages that cause irritation and stuffiness. It also helps thin out the mucus in your nose, causing the stuffiness.
Major bonus points if you can find a nasal saline spray with the addition of xylitol. Xylitol is also highly effective at breaking up thick mucus in the nasal passages.
Use a Neti Pot
If you feel brave and think you can handle running water through your nasal passages, try using a Neti pot. Many people believe a Neti pot is the best way to clear your nose. It works by allowing water to flow through one nasal passage and come out throughout the other nasal passage.
Although this sounds uncomfortable and unpleasant, it clears out any irritants and mucus from your nose, leaving you feeling refreshed and much clearer.
Keep Your Head Elevated to Get Rid of a Stuffy Nose
If your nose is stuffy at night, it will be challenging to get a solid night’s rest. Lying flat can build a lot of pressure in your nasal passages and cause the stuffiness to worsen. Often, one nostril will be evident while the other one is completely clogged.
Keep your head propped up as you sleep with a couple of pillows as you lay on your back. This position will keep your nasal passages much clearer, and in some cases, it may even avoid stuffiness entirely.
Try Using Essential Oils
There are a few different oils that can be particularly useful for helping with a stuffy nose. Studies have found that peppermint, eucalyptus, oregano, and rosemary can help with clogged noses and congestion.
Trying to make a spray with the oils, apply to your chest with a carrier oil, or best yet, use an essential oil diffuser and take deep breathes through your nose. The fine essential oil particles in the mist will flow up your nasal passage and help break up mucus and congestion.
We hope these choices can alleviate your stuffy nose. Stay Healthy!
