To put that number in perspective, that number is five times the amount of people who die by overdosing on prescription medications…and heroin.
That would make prescription drugs the fourth leading cause of death in the US. Heart disease, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory disease rank first, second, and third.
Prescription Drugs Aren’t Necessarily “Bad”
The problem with prescription medications is that they often do a lot of good, alongside the bad. For example, you might take one to prevent a stroke that otherwise would have ended your life.
On top of that, it can be extremely difficult to figure out the role a specific drug played in your health problem. It could have been either a positive or negative role. And remember, in most cases where patients die from a prescription medication, they were taking it as prescribed by the doctor.
So it’s really a mess. Will taking a prescription medication relieve the health complications you’re experiencing…or will it lead to a premature end to your life?
Often, medical experts don’t even know.
Avoid Taking Drugs for the First 7 Years of Their Existence
Dr. Michael Carome of the Health Research Group at Public Citizen (a group that watches things like this to protect consumers) advises not taking a prescription medication until it’s been on the market for at least 7 years. While it may have FDA approval, if something bad’s going to happen, it’s typically going to happen within those first 7 years. So, your chances of remaining safe skyrocket if the drug’s been available for at least that long.
Another rule of thumb to follow is, if you’re taking any medication new to you, and you experience a new symptom in your health, suspect the medication. Of course, you can’t know for sure. And your doctor may not like your view. But you have to be your own advocate in some cases. And often, there’s a safer alternative available.
Do natural supplements hold the cure? Maybe. And maybe not. They can have serious risks too.
You have to research any recommended solutions carefully, make your best decision, and be ready to make changes if you notice anything unusual in your health.
