From Curry, With Love: The Healing Benefits of Turmeric
Do you find yourself routinely popping pain relieving pills to fight inflammation? Whether you suffer from the aches and pains of injury, age or disease, turmeric may offer a form of natural relief.
The most prominent spice found in Asian curry dishes, turmeric is much more than a golden spice with intense flavor. It has been used for thousands of years in India for its medicinal purposes. Curcumin, a special compound found within turmeric, may be the spice’s secret weapon in combating inflammation. With more than 9,000 published peer-reviewed articles, scientific studies have found curacumin’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may be beneficial in the treatment of several diseases stemming from inflammation.
Chronic inflammation plays a major role in most common diseases, including heart disease, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease, among other conditions.
Do you know the leading cause of death in the United States? Heart disease. It is a significant problem due to the inactivity and poor diet of many Americans, often leading to pre-diabetes. This excessive blood sugar damages the inside of blood vessels and arteries. Because of this damage, cholesterol builds to patch certain areas, but only aggravates the condition, leading to high LDL, or “bad” cholesterol levels. Research suggests that taking turmeric supplements reduces total cholesterol, and unlike traditional prescriptions, such as statin drugs, turmeric does not harm the kidneys and liver.
Because turmeric is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory and pain reducing properties, studies have been conducted on rheumatoid arthritis patients to compare the benefits of turmeric to arthritis drugs, many of which are known to cause detrimental side effects, including heart disease. Curacumin-containing turmeric, not prescription drugs, has demonstrated the most significant improvements for patients. More importantly, turmeric treatment has been found to not pose the same side effects as prescription drugs.
Similar results have been found when studying turmeric’s benefits for gastrointestinal diseases. The traditional approach for treating inflammatory bowel disease has been with the help of prescription drugs known as corticosteroids. Although these drugs reduce pain symptoms, the intestinal lining is damaged as a side effect, actually worsening the problem over time. Supplementing with turmeric did not have these side effects and, because of its ability to reduce inflammation, it actually helped to heal the intestinal lining and promoted the growth of healthy intestinal bacteria.
Research has not found any significant side effects of using turmeric for medicinal purposes, although it may cause minor stomach upset or nausea. As with incorporating any health supplement, it is best to consult a doctor before using.
If you struggle with inflammation and have sought relief from traditional drugs, only to suffer from unwanted and harmful side effects, consider a natural source of treatment. Consider the healing benefits from a single spice—turmeric.
