What is L-Arginine?
A significant portion of the human body is composed of protein—our cells, muscles and tissue. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein, and L-arginine is one of 20 amino acids in existence. L-arginine and other amino acids are necessary for important bodily functions. Since it is a component of protein, it can be found in typical dietary sources of protein, including meat, poultry, fish and dairy. However, for individuals who may not consume enough dietary sources of L-arginine, especially vegetarians, supplementation may be necessary.
How does it work in the body?
L-arginine is converted into a chemical called nitric oxide, which causes blood vessels to dilate and improves blood flow. More blood flow means more circulation throughout the body, which is essential for optimal bodily functions. L-arginine also triggers the release of growth hormone and insulin.
What is it used for?
Since L-arginine is an amino acid, and since amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, it is used for protein repair within the human body. The Mayo Clinic has found there is good scientific evidence that dietary supplementation with L-arginine may be beneficial in treating coronary artery disease, chest pain or clogged arteries. This is due to the amino acid’s effects on blood vessels, as previously mentioned. There is also good scientific evidence in L-arginine’s benefits for peripheral vascular disease, a narrowing of blood vessels in the legs and feet that causes pain due to decreased blood flow.
Larger, longer-term studies are needed to confirm other uses for L-arginine, but some studies have shown its beneficial uses in:

High blood pressure, including high blood pressure during pregnancy
Decreased mental capacity, such as dementia
Muscle and tissue repair, such as after surgery or due to athletic performance
Is it safe?
L-arginine can cause some side effects, including abdominal pain, blood abnormalities, respiratory problems, and low blood pressure. As with incorporating any health supplement, it is best to consult a doctor prior to use.
