Know someone who suddenly had a heart attack?
Maybe they tragically lost their life.
Regardless of what happened, it can certainly become a jarring experience. Suddenly you realize the fragility of your own life.
Heart disease is the leading killer of both men and women in the United States and across the entire globe.
But relax, eating a heart-healthy diet doesn’t mean you torture yourself by eating kale chips and brussels sprouts at every meal.
If you approach eating a healthy diet for your heart that way, it won’t last. You’ll get sick and tired of it. And then you’ll return to your old eating habits.
So, eat a heart-healthy diet that you enjoy. One that you look forward to at each meal, rather than dread.
Here are a couple ideas for simple heart-healthy meals:
1. Roasted Salmon and Brussels Sprouts
Alright, so brussels sprouts did make our list of meals. But, you don’t have to eat them straight up. And after all, they are an incredibly healthy food.
Anyway, cover a standard-size baking pan’s bottom in brussels sprouts. Toss in a small handful of cut-up garlic cloves (garlic is amazingly good for your immune system too).
Mix just a few ounces extra-virgin olive oil, oregano, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
Spread (almost but not quite all of) the mixture over your brussels sprouts and garlic cloves in your pan.
Roast at 450 degrees for 15 minutes. Add your salmon filets.
With the remainder of your olive oil mixture, add a small splash of white wine. Add the mixture to your baking pan.
Then add a little more oregano, salt, and pepper to your baking pan.
Roast for 5-10 minutes, depending on how well you like your salmon done.
Squeeze a lemon slice over your meal if you enjoy lemon.
2. Turmeric Chicken Stew
Start by heating olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add 2 chicken breasts (cut into pieces the size of your liking) and cook them until browned and no longer pink in the middle, which usually takes about 5 minutes.
Cut 2 sweet potatoes into pieces again to the size of your liking and add them. Do the same with ½ of an onion.
Cook this until the onion becomes translucent (about 2-3 minutes).
Add 1 small eggplant, 2 garlic cloves, 1 fresh ginger root, 2 teaspoons of turmeric, and cook them all for about 1 minute. Add ½ cup of low-sodium chicken broth and simmer the mixture while stirring occasionally for 20 minutes.
Finally, enjoy the delicious taste. And remember the benefits of a healthy heart and an active, fun life!
